A Facebook Page is No Substitute for a Business Website

I've met many people who started their own business, whether part-time or full, and when they find out that I'm in marketing, they'll often ask me for some advice to help market their products or service. Of course, the first thing I always ask them is, do you have a website? More times than not, they reply, "no, but I have a Facebook page." Hmmm, that's great that you have a Facebook page, but that's not exactly going to cut it when you're marketing yourself. It's always good to be where the people are, and there are many people on Facebook. However, social media is only a tiny part of your overall marketing strategy.

I’ve already written a blog article about the “Six Reasons You or Your Business Needs a Good Website” so I’m not going to go into depth about having a good website. However, I would like to provide a short list of reasons why you shouldn’t have a Facebook page in place of a business website.

  1. Credibility – if anything, credibility should be the very reason to have a website. Having only a Facebook page screams to the customers that you’re not that serious about your business. You’re cutting corners since a Facebook is easier to maintain than a website and cheaper. However, you’d be surprised how easy and inexpensive a website is from one of those online website builders like Weebly, Wix, or Squarespace. They offer drag and drop configuration, no need to code a single line of HTML, and it can be as low as $5/month. A lot of times, you can even get a domain name for free as part of the package.
  2. Searchable – do you know what the number one search engine is? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Facebook. When people in your area are searching for a painter wouldn’t it be great if your website came up?
  3. Complete Ownership – you own the website. You design it and configure it to suit your needs. You brand it with your brand. When you use Facebook, you’re using a third-party website. They have rules, they have regulations, they keep their brand front and center. Your brand takes a back seat.

It's important to have a Facebook page, but don't rely on it to handle your marketing. If you're serious about your business and want it to succeed, please do yourself a favor and invest in a website.

If you need help or have any questions please email or text me. I would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
