Every business whether large or small should have a website to promote their products or services. It is the single most important tool in the marketing toolbox for providing information to current and potential customers. A common goal for many companies is to increase the amount of traffic that their website generates since the number of visitors can equate to potential new customers. For many smaller businesses website traffic is the life blood that pumps in leads that hopefully will convert to an opportunity and then a sale. There are many ways to increase website traffic but which ones create the most impact for a business? Here are five common practices to legitimately increase traffic.

  1. Blogging – they say content is king and it still is. Having a blog is a legitimate way to add meaningful content to a website. This will help with SEO by adding additional keywords and phrases to a website. Visitors will be attracted to a website that offers helpful information.
  2. Social Media – referencing a website on social media posts will also help to attract visitors. Common social media channels include LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube. You can even tease blog posts through social media and get readers to visitors to your business website to read the full article.
  3. Advertising – online advertising is a great way to generate traffic whether it’s a pay-per-click (PPC) service like Google Adwords or a display ad campaign which offers a number of impressions. If targeted to the right customer could see a significant increase in traffic.
  4. Email – email campaigns are still a legitimate way to reach potential customers and attract them to your website. You can target your existing customer list or purchase a new list from one of many contact list providers.
  5. SEO – Search Engine Optimization is probably the single most important practice in increasing traffic. There have been books written on SEO but essentially if you focus on target keywords, tweak titles and permalinks, increase the site speed, optimize images and content then you’re essentially able to attract the right customers. If you focus your efforts on optimizing for the big three Google, Bing, and Yahoo which make up 90% of search engines, then you’re on your way to significant traffic increases.

There are other ways to increase traffic but many are not legitimate, including the use of bots to make it seem like there is an increase in traffic when in fact this is false data. You want to be sure you focus on ways to organically attract visitors or you’re cheating yourself out of good potential customers. Be sure you’re attracting the right visitors.
